My Story - Artist Statement
I am a mixed media artist working from my home studio in Balclutha, New Zealand. I can also be found weekends at our family bach located at Kaka Point on the South Otago coast.
Creativity has always been an integral part of my life. I grew up in a family where drawing was a favourite pass time and making things yourself by hand was part of everyday life. In 2004 after completing a Diploma of Art And Creativity I became a full time artist, staging my first solo exhibition at the Owaka Museum Gallery, in the Catlins December 2011.
My connection to the natural world around me informs my inspiration. Spending time at our bach and wandering the local beaches has greatly influenced my recent choice of subject matter. The coastal landscape and atmosphere are constantly changing where the land, sea and sky meet. Time spent near the sea is very relaxing and restorative and my colour palette reflects this. My hope is to bring these beneficial elements into homes with art.
Paintings are infused with found vintage papers and items that help form the story of the work adding an extra dimension and meaning to the piece. I am fascinated by the history and memories that vintage items hold connecting them to their past. My purpose is to bring these forgotten found memories back into the light to live again. Each painting evolves through a series of repeating layers involving collage, paint, inks and varnish.
